What motivated you to make medicine your career?
My grandfather was a general practitioner in a small town in Georgia. When I was a teenager, he used to let me scrub in and be the first assist during surgery (which you could never do now). That really sparked my interest in medicine.
After growing up with my grandfather’s influence, I always knew that I would pursue a career in medicine. As an athlete, and having seen my fair share of orthopaedic surgeons, I knew I wanted to practice orthopaedics. When I rotated through the orthopaedic service during medical school, the rotation quickly confirmed that it was right for me.
What does your ideal practice look like?
First, I think it is important to cultivate strong physician-patient relationships, to help encourage patients to be inquisitive and to engage them in taking part in their own care. This allows for shared decision making, promoting trust and confidence in the care team. I also believe in a team approach to patient care. Patient care is at its best when the patient and a strong medical team are working together.
